Two days ago, the entire world kicked off Pride month celebrating the progress and beauty of LGBTQ+ love. But as a lawmaker and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I need to be honest. Pride month in Tennessee doesn’t bring very much joy. It reminds us of the hate brought onto us at the hands of Bill Lee. Lee’s own sister married her same sex partner in 2017, and as a wedding gift, Governor Lee passed some of the most homophobic and LGBTQ+ oppressive legislation in the country. These attacks on our LGBTQ+ community include banning adoption to Gay/Lesbian couples, prohibiting LGBTQ+ materials in public education, and harmful attacks on transgender youth. Whereas this slate of hate has a deep direct impact on the LGBTQ+ community, it also negatively affects the state as a whole. If Bill Lee would harm his own sister’s livelihood in this way, imagine what he would do to people not related to him. In April 2021, it was reported that widespread economic and social impacts on Tennessee could be felt - due to the amount of anti-LGBT bills and laws within Tennessee. This Pride month, I hope you’ll honor and celebrate with me by standing up to Bill Lee. We must stop this attack on love.
